Software Engineering at Victoria University

About me

I am 20 years old and currently studying Software Engineering at Victoria University. My name is Declan Cross, but the nickname that I mostly go with my friends and family is DJ.

I chose this path because it has been my favourite interest since primary school and has always been my strongest subject.
I find writing code and figuring out issues very enjoyable and I love designing UIs and websites.

I'm in my second year of software engineering and currently taking the courses, STAT292, COMP261, SWEN221 and NWEN241 where we write code in R, Java and C/C++.

My hobbies include listening to music, sports, hanging out with my friends and gaming [come game and chat with me :D]. I also love photography, which you can check out on my Instagram.

I have experience with HTML/CSS, PHP, Java, jQuery, Python, SQL, Angular, Processing, R, C, and C++, and a bit of Delphi, JavaScript, and jSwing. I'm keen to learn much more and improve my skills. Other than languages, I have also learnt AWS, Scene builder, UML, JavaFX and using Git.

prvs Work

Last year as a summer job, I was a temp worker for AWF. While not digital-related, this job required me to constantly work in new places and immediately do my part.

Some of these roles included: sales assistant for United Flowers, parcel sorting at Toll, and furniture moving. Each of these places required a different set of skills and problem-solving, which I quickly adapted to.
I like to be efficient and stay on top of my tasks and this is shown by having been able to study well and complete all my assignments early while having a part-time job. I work well in a team and am happy to work with others or independently.

Currently, I am a tutor at Victoria University for first-year COMP students. I have finished teaching the first semester and continue teaching in the second semester. It's nice to read other people's code and help them out, while also improving my teaching skills.

I have experience creating websites too. Recently, I redesigned the site, imageen.com. This task included planning, consulting, creating and integrating the design into the existing website.
In college, we were tasked with creating a website to teach a user about a specific part of what we have learnt, and I developed one to help people understand how to create CSS animations and transitions. The page makes use of themes, dynamic viewports, and scripts.

My sKills

I have learnt a few skills in some apps such as Sketch, Blender [How I rendered the bubbles on these pages], Affinity Photo Editor, and Premiere Pro where I make videos.

I am on the Engineering Dean's List for Victoria University.
You can review my summary and records here.

I also have some projects that I have either finished or am currently working on. They include a website for a component library store, A fully functioning game written in Java and Processing, A grade-calculator/predictor that tracks and locally stores your education history [currently working on!], and a wrapper application for Google's AI object recognition API!
All of these are detailed on my projects page.
